In the past 4 days, many nice folks had written up about WP Text Ads. Many have also contacted me by email.
Some of the questions and the problems encountered with the plugin were similar. So this post will try to explain:
- What is WP Text Ads?
- Why should you use WP Text Ads?
- How do you use WP Text Ads?
What is WP Text Ads?
WP Text Ads is a WordPress plugin to help bloggers sell text link ads directly to advertisers. It comes in the Free and Standard editions. The difference is in the number of ads that can be displayed.
The Standard Edition sells for $127, and it is my hope that the Free Edition would have easily made you enough revenue to cover this cost.
WP Text Ads also has the Marketplace to connect you with advertisers. There’s plenty of traffic stats available, and it doesn’t require any registration.
Why should you use WP Text Ads?
Since you are able to sell ads to advertisers directly, you have full control of your ads campaign. This means you pay zero commissions and get paid instantly.
As WP Text Ads is a plugin, it can take advantage of WordPress’s plugin features to extend itself. In fact, the next version of WP Text Ads will come with a simple API that lets you access your ads data and present them any way you like by writing your own plugin.
And it’s fun to run your own ads campaign!
How do you use WP Text Ads?
Installation is very simple. I’ve tried to be as detailed as possible in the documentation. In fact, I might have been too wordy.
The configuration is pretty straightforward. Then you’ll have to place the links on your blog. You can edit your WordPress theme templates directly or use the widgets. Again, they’re straightforward.
But joining the Marketplace requires slightly a bit more effort. The Marketplace documentation has very specific instructions. You basically need to bookmark your blog at del.icio.us and add 2 mandatory tags. Then you submit your application through the WP Text Ads plugin.
What does the future hold for WP Text Ads?
The future of WP Text Ads depends largely on what bloggers wish. I am thankful for their support, and hope to serve the community well. WP Text Ads needs to innovate in this super competitive market, and I hope to achieve this with an API for a start.
One thing that was never on my mind when I created WP Text Ads was to put anyone out of business. I think the existing ads brokers have done a tremendous job in helping bloggers monetize their blogs. WP Text Ads is an alternative to them. I have to mention this because some enthusiastic folks have portrayed WP Text Ads as the TLA-killer. I appreciate their optimism, but that simply will not happen.
I hope this post clears up a couple of doubts about what WP Text Ads is and how it is to be used.
