“Ignoring what?”, you ask.
I love to read forums, and one question that gets asked very often is “Should I do this? Because all my friends/family/accountant seem to think it’s a bad idea.”
Before you give their considerations much thought, it would be better if you asked yourself if it’s better to ignore them.
Don’t get me wrong. We should appreciate people’s concerns for us, but it doesn’t mean that their statements actually carry a lot of truth.
Here are 3 reasons why ignoring is bliss.
-
They have no idea what they are talking about.
This may sound harsh, but how often do you get advice from people who have ‘been there and done that’? Most of the time, people will make assumptions of how your business will pan out based on their own experiences. The final words that come out spell doom and gloom for you.
One question you ought to ask yourself is whether these people actually know what you are talking about. Have they ever run a successful business? If not, should you be taking business advice from them? If they have, are they in businesses relevant to yours?
I was amazed at the number of people who discouraged me from starting WP Text Ads because “you’ll be fighting Google.” They don’t realise that if their bosses had the same attitude as them, they wouldn’t be gainfully employed.
By the way, I am not fighting Google. And I sure hope they don’t want to fight me!

If there are no naysayers, you’re in trouble.
Imagine the following conversation:
Sergey: “We want to build a new search engine.”Larry: “Yeah, and we need some money to buy a few servers to get us going.”John Doerr: “Ya-hoo! Exactly what I want to invest in. Let me write you a cheque right away.”Let’s face it, every good idea has a good number of detractors and every great idea has a great number of detractors. So it’s ok to ignore them.
-
It helps you stay focused on opportunities.
It’s tough enough running a start-up, so why do you want to spend so much time worry about what detractors have to say? Seek out the good aspects of your business and work on it. Delight your customers and listen to the people who have a direct impact in the survival of your business.
I am able to write this post because I’ve been ‘discouraged’ so often by people close to me. But I’ve learnt that it doesn’t matter what they say, but what I do that determines success or failure.
If you understand that ignoring is bliss, then you’ll learn how to ’switch off’ to discouraging bystanders, and ’switch on’ to really experienced business people.
So take heart and get going on your start-up. Showing up is half the battle won!
